| This paper examines gemination in the Quranic verbs occurring in the Mutawātir readings, its morphological and exegetical consequences, using the approaches of al-Samīn al-Ḥalabī and Ibn ʻĀshūr. The problem comes out in difference in some verbs which bear the same root yet come out geminated in one reading and non-geminated in the other hence bring about distinctions in meanings which can be used to make reading different. The study examines the semantic influence of gemination, the comparison of the interpretation of both exegetes of geminated forms, and the degree of their interpretation in relation to the morphological structure, context, and the overall purpose of the surah. A descriptive-analytical approach is used, and the chosen verbs are examined morphologically, associated with the Mutawātir readings, and the two approaches are critically and comparatively evaluated. The results indicate that gemination is not a phonetic process only, but it has meanings like intensity, multiplicity, transitivity, and rhetorical stress. Al-Samīn stresses on morphological structure and derivation as the determinants of meaning, but Ibn ʻĀshūr combines morphology with the rhetorical purpose and context. This paper concludes by noting that gemination is a useful exegetical instrument and recommends integrative comparative techniques that combine morphology, rhetoric, and Qur’anic readings to develop a better perception of the text. | ||
