Official Announcement of the "Guidelines for the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in Research"
2025-11-18

To all esteemed professors, researchers, authors, and dear students:

Following the rapid growth and unprecedented expansion of generative AI-based tools and the inevitable entry of these technologies into the realm of knowledge production, the need for a transparent and ethical framework for their use in research processes has become increasingly apparent.

Accordingly, the Iran National Science Foundation, in close collaboration with the country's prominent researchers, has developed and officially issued a comprehensive and precise directive titled "Guidelines for the Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools in Research." This action has been taken to organize, safeguard scientific ethics, and enhance transparency in research activities.

Scope of the Guidelines and Foundational Principles

These guidelines permit the use of AI tools in all stages of scientific research – from developing proposals, gathering and analyzing data, writing technical and scientific reports, to the sensitive process of article peer review – provided that the foundational principles of transparency and accountability are fully observed.

Two key and vital clauses of this directive are as follows:

  1. Full Transparency in Reporting: Researchers are required to accurately and explicitly declare the type, name, version, and extent of the influence of the AI tools used in different sections of their research, in both proposals and final articles.

  2. Ultimate Responsibility of the Researcher: It must be emphasized that AI is merely an efficient auxiliary tool and does not, under any circumstances, replace the researcher. Therefore, the responsibility for the scientific accuracy, validity of the generated content, and the ultimate authenticity of the work rests entirely with the primary author and researcher.

These guidelines serve as a beacon for the scientific community, enabling it to confidently move towards producing higher quality and more responsible science by blending time-honored research traditions with AI innovations. All respected authors and reviewers are requested to study the full details of this directive to ensure full compliance with the new regulations.
